Senior’s Week Kick-Off 2023 Recap
On Monday June 5th, 2023, Age Friendly Edmonton held a Seniors' Week Kick-off event at City Hall to celebrate seniors in Edmonton and all that they contribute to the city. The day started off with a welcome, land acknowledgement and opening prayer. The Deputy Mayor of Edmonton, Ashley Salvadore, then spoke and signed the network declaration on behalf of Mayor Amarjeet Sohi in support of boosting senior services in Edmonton! Thank you to all of the sponsors of the Seniors Week Kick-off event.
A key highlight of the event were chapbooks (booklets) that were created for the event featuring 36 unique poems written by Edmonton seniors. 2 selected poems from the chapbooks were read aloud by seniors: Ronna Jevne and Jannie Edwards. Read the 2023 Chapbook here.
Shortly after the poem readings, Age Friendly Edmonton presented a video titled "The Journey of Aging" about Edmonton's seniors.
The day concluded with door prizes, final remarks and a performance by Wild Rose Old Tyme Fiddlers. Thank you to those who attended the event: audience members, poets, volunteers, sponsors and more!
